Not much beats the peace and serenity of a Southern California Sunset - image taken outside of Los Angeles in Pacific Palisades, October 2018. Keep on reading the story behind my Palm Tree Sunset Picture!
This palm tree sunset image is special to me for a few reasons:
The unique pastel colors of the sunset are not very common - while I don't have statistical data around how frequent these pastel colors occur, I can tell you that over the hundreds of sunsets I've watched this one was special.
The calm ocean in the background with the pastel colors instantly brings peace and serenity to my soul.
The palm tree foreground helps create depth in the image and transports me to a warm destination. For me personally I'm transported back to Southern California; however, I enjoy how universal this view can be.
This image reminds me as a photographer how important it is to always have your camera on you.
While many of my shots are planned out and a part of a larger trip, this palm tree sunset was not - it was somewhat spur of the moment as I stepped away from my family gathering for a quick walk with my dad around the neighborhood. This was one of those father-son moments, almost like what you see in the movies, where we were able to have a good heart-to-heart conversation at the end of a long day. As the sun started to set we noticed the pastel colors slowly start to illuminate on the horizon.
As I reached into my bag and pulled out my camera we started assessing our possible compositions and the best view to watch the sunset. After 5-10 minutes of walking we finally landed on the location and had 5-10 minutes to stand there, continue our conversation, and capture some images as the sun set. It was perfect.
Through my images my goal is to allow viewers feel the emotion and visual experience I had while I captured the image. For this particular image my objective is to help you feel the peace and serenity that I did as I stood there and watched the sun set.
This is my image story, yours will be different. I hope my story helps provide some context to this image along with insight into me as a photographer.
